Description: An homage to the Japanese ritual of folding cranes upon the passing of a loved one, the numerous butterflies that dot this white canvas were painted to cope with the four year long descent of the Artist's Grandmother into the late and final stages of dementia.

Life imitates art in that the butterflies fly upwards towards the sun in an attempt to experience the outer world.

In tradition with her grandmother’s preferred medium, watercolor, these became an exercise in perfecting a certain technique by repeating it over and over. These pieces represent the duality of life and inherent suffering that we all must endure at some point time. The actual count of paper butterflies is unconfirmed.

88 Paper Butterflies is part of a collection of works by self-taught artist Bridget Kilgallon. Through her art, she attempts to communicate how we transmute times of trauma and loss into creative expression. Her works explore the polarity between beauty and darkness through the use of multi-media techniques that reach beyond the canvas. An uncomplicated motif, the butterfly integrates deep meaning with sublime references to the subconscious intuition and ancient symbolism.
